What to Pack, What to Ditch: Real Advice From a VA + Mom
Let’s be honest: sending your kid to college is basically like planning a cross-country move… but with more emotions and fewer packing cubes. As a professional organizer and a mom, I’ve seen both sides of the packing chaos—and I’ve got thoughts.
Whether your kid is already mentally moved into their dorm or you’re still googling “do they allow toasters,” here’s a guide to help you pack smart, skip the clutter, and avoid last-minute breakdowns (yours or theirs).
✅ What to Pack (The Essentials That Actually Get Used)
1. Bed + Bath Basics
Twin XL sheets (yes, the weird size)
Mattress topper = instant dorm luxury
Towels, shower caddy, and flip flops (trust me)
2. Laundry & Cleaning
Pop-up hamper
Detergent pods
Clorox wipes (they won’t use them, but you will when you visit)
3. Tech & Desk Gear
Power strip with surge protector
Phone charger + laptop charger (bring extras!)
A small desk lamp or clip-on light
4. Personal & Comfort Items
Favorite mug, blanket, or stuffy (no shame)
Family photo or something from home
A small toolkit (with scissors + tape—yes, really)
❌ What to Ditch (AKA What Comes Home Unused)
1. Too Many Clothes
They will live in 3 sweatshirts and joggers. Pack for the season and let them swap at break.
2. Full Kitchen Setups
Unless they’re in an apartment, skip the pots and pans. A microwave, mug, and a mini fridge go a long way.
3. Office Supplies Overload
They don’t need 15 highlighters, a stapler, and a filing system. This isn’t the IRS.
4. Bulk Storage Bins
Stackable? Cool. Giant tubs they never open? Not so much.

VA Tip: Create a Shared Digital Folder
Use Google Drive or Dropbox to set up a shared folder with your student before they leave.
Include:
Insurance cards
Vaccination records
Emergency contacts
Power of Attorney forms (especially if they’re 18+!)
Copies of student ID, license, etc.
Bonus: You’ll look like a genius when they lose something 2 months in.
Real Talk From a Mom
You’ll overpack. You’ll cry. You’ll forget something. It’s fine. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s helping them feel prepared and supported (and maybe leaving with your heart only half-shattered).
